Overview In the good old days, the Pug 205 GTi was the daddy of the hot-hatches and expectations have been high for its successor, the sharply-styled 206. It has yet to live up to the 205's reputation. The standard GTi doesn't have the performance to shine and while the GTi 180 partly addresses that criticism it's still out-gunned by many rivals. But perhaps the 206 GTi's biggest failing was in terms of its accommodation. The driving position was, without putting too fine a point on it, dreadful. The steering wheel was off-centre and quite flat, the seat cushion was also too flat and the pedals were offset at a weird angle, forcing the hapless driver into what looked like a yoga position.

The 206 GTi 180 appears to be Peugeot's answer to the more powerful breed of hot hatch such as the Type-R and SEAT Leon Cupra, though it may be too little, too late, especially with the new generation comfortably exceeding 200bhp. The Peugeot's engine is a joy to push hard, with a throaty induction roar and healthy mid-range torque. This car is seriously good fun to drive. And it doesn't let you down in the corners. Though my 205 is now a distant memory, this 206 seemed to have the same front end grip and enough lift-off 'adjustability' at the back to seem very similar. The only minus was a slightly sloppy cable gearshift, but not to the extent it became irritating.
